The Weight Loss Discovery That Changed My Life

Summary/Key Learnings:

As always, if you only want the key points from this post, here they are:

  1. I don’t consider counting calories a healthy long-term lifestyle choice, BUT I think there’s a lot to learn about your food choices from counting calories when you’re first getting started with weight loss.
  2. MyFitnessPal – it’s an excellent tool for educating yourself about food choices. If you’re completely honest it’ll give an excellent picture of where you need change.
  3. When the numbers are in, don’t let them freak you out. Look for an easy win and either cut back or remove it from your diet. Like I’ve said before, start slow. I got started by removing the 2nd sugar from my coffee.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

MyFitnessPal. It’s an app. You may have heard about it. It’s not a secret, but it has changed how much I eat and what I know, or thought I knew about food.

Let’s just get something out of the way. I hate the idea of counting calories! I don’t consider it a long-term solution, or a healthy way to live your life. However, the few months I spent counting calories taught me a HUGE amount about what I was eating and it’s an education that’ll serve me well for the rest of my life. Was that a pun? I think it was a pun.

When you first get started with MyFitnessPal you enter your height and weight and set a goal. My first goal was to lose 10kg. At this point MyFitnessPal will crunch some numbers and tell you what a sensible daily calorie intake is to reach your goal. Sweet. After entering my deets, the app set me an initial target of 1850 calories per day. I had no idea what that meant.

The first day was a revelation! And not a good one. It was the type of day I’ve come to know as a blowout. 1250 calories on coffee alone! I knew from my first attempt to lose weight that making drastic changes to my diet was never going to stick. It’s just not sustainable. As I’ve said before, I’m NOT a fan of diets, or anything that calls itself a ‘detox’ or ‘cleanse’. This is the stuff that people try to sell you online.

Want to know what I am a fan of? Making small changes that will eventually produce big results. With this in mind, the most obvious starting point for me was to cut back on the amount of sugar I was putting in my coffee.

Halving the amount of sugar in my coffee’s slashed 150 calories from my daily intake. A small win, but a win is a win when you’re just starting out trying to lose weight and get healthy. Feel good about the wins!

I encourage you to do the same! Start tracking your calorie intake and start building a picture of what you’re consuming. I say consuming because those drinks count too. Soft drinks and juices can be a killer! And when I say track everything, I mean EVERYTHING!

Analyse your food (and drink) consumption, look for the easy wins and make a small, permanent change that you can live with. Keep it up until it becomes a habit. Then pick another small change and make that a habit. Don’t feel guilty if you drop the ball every once in a while. It happens. Just pick it back up right where you left off.
